‘Dirty video’ of cleaners at luxury hotels
By Sophia Yan, China Correspondent
HIGH-end hotels in China run by international chains Marriott, Hilton and Hyatt have apologised after a viral video showed a cleaner using the same sponge to wipe drinking cups and a lavatory.
That and other unsanitary activities were featured on an 11-minute film claiming to have used a hidden camera at 14 international hotels in China that has been shared widely and watched nearly 30 million times.
One online user wrote: “I always thought five-star hotels would be much better. I never expected this to be the case.” Hotels featured included the Le Royal Meridian Shanghai and two Sheraton hotels in other Chinese cities, all operated by Marriott, as well as the Waldorf Astoria in Shanghai, one of the Hilton hotel brands.
All the hotels issued apologies and many of the 14 businesses named and shamed said they are investigating.
Raising and enforcing standards is an uphill battle at Chinese hotels, given low wages for cleaners and staffing shortages.
