5,000 people have recently been told in a letter that they shared hospital facilities with patients infected with Carbapenemase-Producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE). CPE is resistant to several antibiotics and has a mortality rate of around 50%.

Around 1 in 20 people carry the bacteria harmlessly in the gut, but around 1 in 400 will develop a serious infection.
